	Abstract:	The Women's Art Club of Cleveland was established in 1912 in the Gage Gallery as the first exclusively female art organization in Cleveland, Ohio. The club formed when the Bohemian Club split into a men's club, The Arts Club (later The Cleveland Society of Artists), and a women's club, The Women's Art Club of Cleveland. The mission of the club was to bring female artists together in order to facilitate community and higher artistic ideals. Also, the club wanted to advance the artistic interests of Cleveland through educational programs and exhibitions of members' artwork. Further, they sought recognition, respect, and support based on their exhibitions from the Cleveland community with an interest in the city's cultural growth. Women became members by filing applications and being voted in by the club. The four classes of membership (active, associate, sustaining, and life) were based on whether or not the woman created artwork. Active members created artwork, but associate members did not. Associate members had an interest in art, but did not vote or hold office. Sustaining members were active or associate members who toke a larger financial responsibility in the club. Also, life members were active or associate members who paid a designated fee. The Board of Trustees had ultimate control over the club. The Trustees elected from among themselves the President, Vice-President, Recording and Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer. Various committees conducted the activities of the club. Exhibitions and social events were the main focus of the club. The collection consists of scrapbooks.

	Abstract:	The Musical Art Society, a women's music club, was founded in 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio. Performance and audition standards were criteria for admission of members; and meetings, held at members' homes, included vocal and instrumental performances and presentation of papers on composers and musical topics. The Society also sponsored musical and cultural events for the public, and offered scholarships to promising young musicians and vocalists in the Cleveland area. The collection consists of constitutions and bylaws, minutes, correspondence, programs, seasonal yearbooks, and scrapbooks.

	Abstract:	The Ophello Club was a woman's social club and study group located in East Cleveland, Ohio. Founded in 1902 and originally affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church, the club became associated with the Cleveland Museum of Art at the end of World War I, holding meetings at the museum, using museum staff as advisors, and focusing their study efforts on the museum's collections. The collection consists of a scrapbook compiled for the club's 50th Anniversary, containing a year-by-year history and programs, with officer lists, presentation titles and meeting dates.

	Abstract:	The Links of Cleveland Incorporated was established in 1950 as a local chapter of a national non-profit, non-partisan volunteer organization of African American women. Beginning with its first president, Rosalind Garvin, the organization committed to educational, cultural, social, and civic activities to raise funds for charitable causes. Recipients of this fundraising have included the Cleveland National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); Karamu House; the Eliza Bryant Home; Forest City Hospital; the Jewish Welfare Fund; and, the Phillis Wheatley Association. The collection consists of administrative files, correspondence, budgets, financial records, minutes, memoranda, membership lists, newsletters, reports, programs, press releases, subject files, statements, histories, bylaws, guest books, handbooks, publications, transcripts, articles of incorporation, agendas, project files, and presidential files.

	Abstract:	Dorothy Davis Kates was employed by the Historical Records Survey of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in Cleveland, Ohio, during the 1930s; serving as a Superintendent of the Cuyahoga County Archives Survey Project, as an Area Supervisor, a Project Planning Assistant, and eventually as the Director of the Historical Records Program of the WPA in Cleveland. Kates was also active in many civic and arts organizations throughout her life, including the Print Club of Cleveland, the Cleveland Society for Contemporary Art, and the Women's City Club of Cleveland. Beginning in 1966, she chaired the Mental Health Committee of the Women's City Club, helping to organize lectures and community projects concerned with mental health, drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, child abuse, and prison reform issues. She founded the Women's City Club Mental Health Institute in 1976. Kates was also active in local Democratic Party politics, particularly in the presidential elections of 1960, 1964, and 1968. Other organizations in which she participated included the Women's Forum of Greater Cleveland, Le Cercle des Conferences Francaise, Organization for Rehabilitation through Training, Federation of Jewish Women's Organizations, and the Jewish Community Center. Kates also was the author of articles, reviews, essays, and radio plays. The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, essays, newspaper and magazine articles, play transcriptions, unpublished manuscripts, notes, lists, rosters, bylaws, reports, brochures, itineraries, programs, memoranda, cards, campaign flyers, newsletters, legislative bills, publications, surveys, schedules, regulations, directories, awards, and certificates.

	Abstract:	The College Club of Cleveland was founded on January 15, 1898 in Cleveland, Ohio. Louise Pope and Carolyn Shipman, two college graduates, were concerned with promoting the "social, philanthropic, and literary interests" of other college-educated women in the Cleveland area. The club started with 88 members from 17 colleges and universities. Miss Pope was elected the first president of the College Club, while Miss Shipman served as the first secretary. The group met twice a month on Monday afternoons. The collection consists of official documents, flyers, letters, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, ledgers, minute books, audit reports, programs, and photographs.

11	Title:	Cleveland Sorosis Records

	Abstract:	Cleveland Sorosis was a women's cultural and service club founded in 1891 by former members of the Western Reserve Club (est. 1882) which had recently dissolved. Growing membership led to the organization of a separate club for younger women, called Junior Sorosis. One of Sorosis' many special interest departments was the Selover Club, founded for the study of parliamentary law. The collection consists of minutes, yearbooks, correspondence, record books, membership registration and pledge books, an annual report book, an 1894 club annual, a scrapbook, and a club history book. Also included are minutes of the Junior Sorosis and Selover Club.

	Abstract:	The Federation of Women's Clubs of Greater Cleveland was organized in 1902 in Cleveland, Ohio, as the City Federation of Women's Clubs. In 1904 it changed its name to the Cleveland Federation of Women's Clubs. In 1930 it became the Federation of Women's Clubs of Greater Cleveland. Its purpose has always been to coordinate the educational, civic and welfare activities of women's clubs in the Cleveland area. 	Abstract:	The Music and Drama Club of Cleveland was a women's club devoted to promoting interest in, and appreciation of, the combined arts of music and drama. The club was founded in 1904 in Cleveland, Ohio, and originally was called the Music and Drama Study Club. They held monthly meetings featuring performances, primarily by members, and awarded scholarships to students at the Cleveland Music School Settlement, Cleveland Play House and Cleveland Institute of Music, as well as donating funds to various musical organizations in the community. The collection consists of minutes, annual reports, scrapbook materials, and clippings, as well as questionnaires, scripts for skits, and publications concerning scholarship awards.

	Abstract:	The Women's Centennial Commission of Cleveland, Ohio, was founded in 1895 as the Women's Auxiliary of the Cleveland Centennial Commission. The group formally became a part of the Cleveland Centennial Commission on September 25, 1895, when its name was changed to the Woman's Department of the Cleveland Centennial Commission. Mary B. Ingham served as the first president, and Catherine Hitchcock Avery was chairman of the executive board. Woman's Day, a part of the centennial celebration, was held July 28, 1896. In December 1896, an aluminum casket time capsule was filled by members and sealed, to be opened one hundred years later in 1996 during the bicentennial of the founding of Cleveland. The casket was given to the Western Reserve Historical Society for safekeeping. In 1898, the executive committee of the Woman's Department became a permanent organization. Each member designated a successor, and yearly meetings were held. In 1921, a second aluminum casket time capsule was prepared, commemorating the one hundred twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of Cleveland. This casket was not sealed until 1927, so that volume five of the Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve, a project begun in 1896 by the Woman's Department, and edited by Gertrude Van Rensselaer Wickham, could be included. That same year, the name of the group was changed to the Women's Centennial Commission. Continued by the successors of the women of 1896 and 1921, a sealed aluminum casket was placed at the Western Reserve Historical Society during the sesquicentennial celebration of Cleveland in 1946. At the one hundred seventy-fifth anniversary of Cleveland in 1971, a fourth time capsule was prepared. The group was revived as the bicentennial of 1996 approached, and in 1996, the contents of the time capsules were unpacked by lineal descendants of the original members. The collection consists of the contents of four aluminum casket time capsules from the years 1896, 1921, 1946, and 1971. The contents include letters, constitutions and bylaws, minutes, resolutions, financial statements, programs, lists, certificates, cards, photographs, invitations, addresses, speeches, essays, poems, newspaper clippings, magazines, newsletters, newspapers, brochures, directories, bulletins, notes, books, pamphlets, annual reports, yearbooks, biographical and genealogical sketches, business cards, medals, ribbons, coins, flags, badges, a gavel, drawings, watercolor prints, maps, calendars, and a poster. Material from philanthropic, social service, cultural, and religious organizations and agencies of the time is included. Documentation on the formation and organization of the Women's Centennial Commission is included, as is a large amount of personal letters and photographs addressed to their descendants by Commission members. The collection also documents how the Cleveland centennial was planned and celebrated in 1896, and how subsequent anniversary years were celebrated. Original manuscripts and copies of the speeches and toasts given during Woman's Day in 1896 were included in the time capsules.

	Abstract:	May Hope Francis was a prominent clubwoman in Cleveland, Ohio, during the 1920s and 1930s. Much of her community work was done through her membership in the Cleveland Federation of Women's Clubs as member and chairman of its American Citizenship Committee. Mrs. Francis also worked with the City of Cleveland during the tenure of City Manager William R. Hopkins to promote ethnic cultural events and to publicize civic events, including the 1927 reception for Charles A. Lindbergh. In 1929, she helped establish the All Nations Hopkins Testimonial Committee. She was also active in the Women's Organization of the National Retail Druggists Association and the Early Settlers Association of Cuyahoga County. The collection consists of scrapbooks, correspondence, a ledger, and newspaper clippings. Most of the collection relates to Francis' work with the Cleveland Federation of Women's Clubs and with the City of Cleveland, particularly the reception for Charles A. Lindbergh in 1927, and ethnic programs sponsored by the City.

	Abstract:	The Fortnightly Musical Club was established by Cleveland, Ohio, women in 1894 to sponsor concerts and cultural programs. It later helped establish the Cleveland Music School Settlement and the Cleveland Institute of Music. The collection consists of programs, anniversary folders, a 1970 inventory, yearbooks, bulletins, guest books, scrapbooks, and minutes which also contain correspondence, financial statements, and lists of officers, members and events. Also included are materials from the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs.
